Cloudways. It is cheaper than the thing it runs on.
DigitalOcean sells a 2GB / 1 vCPU / 50GB droplet for $12/mo. Cloudways sells you that identical machine for $11/mo, and throws in server management, patching, firewalling, staging environments, free migration and 24/7 support. You are being paid a dollar a month to not be a sysadmin. There is no clever caveat hiding in the spec sheet: the hardware is the same hardware, because it literally is DigitalOcean underneath. Unless you specifically need root, the unmanaged option is strictly worse and more expensive, and the only reason to choose it is a reason about control, not money.
Choose DigitalOcean instead if…
Buy raw DigitalOcean if you need root — and you will know if you do.
Cloudways is an abstraction, and abstractions have edges. You do not get root. You cannot install arbitrary system packages, run a non-standard daemon, or tune the kernel. If you are running anything that is not a conventional PHP or Node application — a custom binary, an unusual database, a service that needs privileged access — the managed layer stops being convenience and becomes a wall. Take the droplet, pay the extra dollar, and accept that patching, hardening and 3am recovery are now your job. We earn nothing from DigitalOcean, and it is still the right answer for that person.
